Re: DNS Timeout Question

Ratbox does not allow more than one CNAME in a reverse lookup. One CNAME is allowed because that is the way to delegate reverse DNS for smaller than a /24. Any more than that would make the ircd spend too much time chasing CNAMEs imho.

I just tried this on the two csircd servers, and they both support it. Thanks moogle :)
Ratbox and hybrid(7) have both supported this for a long time.

An alternative is a more sophisticated round robin, that checks in which continent/region/whatever you are and returns a server from there (or just a pointer to a regional round robin). Some other networks do things like this.

Note that the rfc states a check for '@' is only needed when the channel is +i. The RFC also states that it is possible to invite to nonexistent or invalid channels, and no efnet server allows that. Looking at it pragmatically, there is no reason for nonchanops to be able to invite to a channel, as...

you do not need so many bots and certainly not from one box

note that many clients from one /64 or similar can also be considered clones

Why not ban all Turkish IP ranges from the channel (leaving the bans on 24x7)? Reverse engineering bot code can help finding patterns in the data they provide to the server. These can be useful to ban spambots as soon as they connect. Problems are that these patterns can be very subtle (requiring co...

Perhaps there should be a better way to select channels for the spamtrap bots, there is no use having them join/part a channel without spambots all day. However only people who are in the channel for a longer time tend to know whether the channel has spambot problems. An automated or semi-automated ...

Re: cant connect to server as banned (newbie)

(*** Banned (cache)) This means you are reconnecting several times and K-lined (server ban), G-lined (network ban), X-lined (ban on realname, "Bad user info") or unauthorized (no auth block for your IP) every time. The best thing to do is look in your scrollback or logs, the true reason should be i...

Re: yet another ban-topic

helps to see i'm not the only one getting frustrated by EFnet. well,i am banned from most EFnet servers. or lets say, i didnt find one i'm not banned from yet. i used the URL that came with my k-line to request removal for my IP from the banlist. actually i did that two times but i got banned again...

Re: server help

Yeah, trying to join the wrong channel can get you klined. Usually these klines are on a single server only so try another server from the list on http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers

I must say, I'm having the same issue. I'm using Trillain IRC and have tried the web chat on efnet.org. It connects however any join requests simply don't go work. When I connect to any of the servers I get this(stuff in all caps I edited): ****SERVER INFO GOES HERE***** [10:42] *** :SERVER 403 Lup...

In general I agree with this.

I think, if you want a 15 day timeout, it should reset at every post (i.e. lock if there are no new posts for 15 days).

Otherwise the timeout would have to be longer, as I can imagine threads which naturally last longer than 15 days.

Offsite news?

A few days ago a new forum "offsite news" has been created with lots of news messages. These make it hard to find the actual efnet-related messages in "View posts since last visit". Who runs that bot and is there any way to avoid the news appearing in "View posts since last visit"? ;-)
