do you have a cable modem/dsl router? that might be it too.

I'd try xbox-scene help or mirc help. We're really only any good at getting you connected to an IRC server.

are you banned from all servers, or just a few of them? do you get a reason for being banned when you try to connect?

the IP you're trying to connect from has, or at one time had, an open proxy running on it. if you check out that URL, you should see a bunch of links to remove yourself from the blacklists if you think you don't have a proxy running.

this is hardly the place to ask about this [we don't support warez here]. but, assuming, since you never specified, that you're downloading legal stuff, the reason is that not everybody has great uplinks. if you're downloading from someone on a cable connection, you're not going to get as fast as if...

if you look up your IP on the URL munky provided, it will give you a link to request removal of the IP from their blacklist. it's possible that some other user on your ISP has an open proxy, and has been getting every IP they've been using blacklisted. that's another headache alltogether.

so far i'm pretty happy with the little netscreen 5gt i've got under my desk. it's even got some built in virus protection [that i don't really use], and can block patterns in http requests [if i remember correctly]. but, of course, i didn't have to pay for it
