Efnet accidentally(?) using email spam blacklist of residential IPs, D-line'd all comcast

Postby superkuh » Sun Dec 08, 2019 9:56 pm

Hi. I've been a user on efnet for decades. I've been unable to join the server for the last 2 weeks because EFnet seemingly has starting using a blacklist meant for email, and thus naturally including Comcast residential IPs, to restrict who can join the *IRC* servers. This has to be a mistake. No email blacklist makes sense for IRC. And I am certainly not running an open proxy or whatever on my home IP address.

This is what happens every time I try to join *any* efnet server, not just prison.net or efnet.nl or the like.
* - irc@prison.net or try /msg Rogue_F help me please!
* -
* End of /MOTD command.
* You are banned from this server- Temporary D-line 1440 min. - Blacklisted Proxy found. Visit http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=24.118.172.137 for info. (2019/11/30 08.56)
* Closing Link: c-24-118-172-137.hsd1.wi.comcast.net (Connection closed)

...weeks of trying to connect later and it's the same...

* Looking up irc.efnet.nl
* Connecting to irc.efnet.nl (185.100.59.59) port 6667...
* Connected. Now logging in...
* *** Banned: Temporary D-line 14400 min. - host is DNSBL listed - see: http://www.spamhaus.org/query/ip/24.118.172.137 (2019/12/6 04.13)
* Disconnected (Remote host closed socket).
I don't understand what's going on. I had been connected for 90+ days straight then after I rebooted one day I could not rejoin. Every server gives me this message. Does anyone know why this is happening? I've tried emailing a couple server ops about it (prison.net and the like) but that was a week ago and there's still no response.

Do you think that me running my website, http://superkuh.com/ from my home connection is being falsely detected as an open proxy? Or is this really what it seems like and Efnet is using *email* blacklists for *irc*? Alternately, does anyone know how I could contact any server ops via email beyond ircops@prison.net?

Try a different server; there are many, such as irc.servercentral.net
EFnet IRC Network Forum Moderator
IRC Operator (IRCOp) irc.Prison.NET
Sic transit gloria mundi.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if you did something or someone else fixed things, but now I can join any and all efnet servers again. So case closed. But back when it was a problem I did try all the efnet servers I could find with the same result.

Heres what you may try. Get someone to port scan your IP address and check to see if its similar to that of a proxy. If yes, then depending on your ISP, to change that you may have to switched providers. Also make sure to use your public ip address that others see. You may check it here https://www.purevpn.com/what-is-my-ip
