\ in nickname

Postby oLution » Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:46 pm

Hi,

when i try to connect to a efnet with a nick starting with \ (Backslash), it says this nickname is not valid. When i connect using a "normal" nick and rename to a nick with \ after connect it works.
Is it ok to use this trick when i want a nick starting with a backslash ? If so, why is connecting not allowed but renaming after is ?

What IRC Client are you using?
I believe your IRC client is for some reason reporting that the nickname is invalid.

I just tried with irssi -c server -n phisher\

and that expected the next line of input, but then I escaped the \ with \ and it worked.

irssi -c server -n phisher\\

Hi phisher1
Escaping works :)
The "client" i'm using is eggdrop 1.6.18

Without escaping i get
[13:14] Trying server irc.inter.net.il:6667
[13:14] Connected to irc.inter.net.il
[13:14] -NOTICE- *** Looking up your hostname...
[13:14] -NOTICE- *** Checking Ident
[13:14] -NOTICE- *** Couldn't look up your hostname
[13:14] -NOTICE- *** Got Ident response
[13:14] Server says my nickname is invalid.

Thank you
