Cannot connect to efnet [10053] Software caused connection a

Postby smodtactical » Tue Jan 08, 2013 1:57 am

Hey all, im getting the [10053] Software caused connection abort error whenever I try to connect to Efnet. I am able to connect to Dalnet and other networks without trouble.

I have a Ubee DDW3611 modem/router and I added myself to the DMZ on the router firewall but this didn't fix the problem.

Any idea how to fix this ? Thanks so much!

The most likely cause of your problem is your router is blocking your ability to ident your client. See your client's and router's help instructions to see if that can resolve the issue. Otherwise, try connecting to a server manually. A list of servers is at: http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers however, be aware, that not all servers accept non-idented clients and if any publish whether they do or not, I haven't found it.

This is what I suspected as well which is why I added myself to the DMZ, but this clearly did not work. Its strange though that I was able to connect to other servers for other networks. I don't know what else I can do in terms of my router.

I have also tried to connect to different irc servers for efnet manually and this has not worked.

Try irc.Prison.NET port 6667 and paste in full any error message.

I am assuming you are using mIRC. In Alt-O | Connect --> Identd -- Port should be 113 and UserID should be 10 characters, not 14.

Then the problem is most likely your router and its supplier/docs will have to be your source of help.

have you tried servers other than prison?

what sort of anti-virus software are you running?

Yes I have tried numerous other servers with no luck.

As for the antivirus software I use Avast thats fully updated always. Moreover when I bring my system (laptop) to other networks, like hotels during travel, I can connect to Efnet perfectly. So a virus I think is not the cause and instead its a router/network problem.

I tried to disable my router firewall and also connect directly to the router with an ethernet cable and this still did not solve the problem.

Please does anyone have any idea how to fix this? This is such a weird problem. Getting this error ONLY with efnet? How can that be?

i don't think it's that you have a virus, my suspicion was the antivirus software itself. there have been instances in the past where an antivirus interprets the irc connection as part of a virus or spybot, and kills the connection. but since the same laptop works fine in other locations, i would suspect it's your ISP. i assume you've tested other irc clients?

just for shits and giggles, have you tried a raw connect? using a telnet client, it would look something like this (bold is what you would be typing)
$ telnet irc.servercentral.net 6667
Trying 66.225.225.225...
Connected to irc.servercentral.net.
Escape character is '^]'.

Hey munky thanks for your post. I was able to connect with mibbit the web IRC client. I tried icechat but its not working to connect to any server because of some Active X issue.

This is interesting. Why is mibbit working? Any idea?

I'd guess that Mibbit uses your browser and their own client for connection. That raises the question of your mIRC. Where did you get it? If not from http://www.mirc.com I'd suggest you delete it and redownload from the official site with the latest version. Install it without any addon scripts, as these might be interfering. They can be added one by one later so as to be able to identify the offending one.

mibbit connections go from your browser, to the mibbit webserver, to the irc server. this is similar to why you can get on other networks, but not efnet.

since your laptop connects fine to efnet when you travel, i suspect it is either your home router, or something at your home ISP that is interfering with port 6667 (IRC) traffic to efnet servers. more specifically, to the behavior of ratbox which is used by the majority of efnet servers (not all ircds behave identical, which is why different networks have different features).
