Verio links a second server named irc.jealousy.com

Postby Hardy » Tue Oct 21, 2003 4:57 pm

The Verio admin, next, has announced that he will link in irc.jealousy.com as a client server which will eventually replace the existing server irc.wh.verio.net. This server is open for everyone to use, as opposed to irc.wh.verio.net, which is open to *.us/edu/org/net/com with working identd.

hahahaha :)

And you know you are the "last operlackey standing" when you are the only one

Well, this is the same server in a new wrapper really, only "big" change is the name and that they open for everyone ( if irc.wh.verio.net really delinks that is.. )

Next has indicated that the old verio will likely delink at some point in the future, but not immediately. They want to make sure the new server is stable before doing anything drastic.

just out of curiosity, do you want server admins to have root on the that an efnet irc server runs from? also do they need to be an isp and what type of FD limit do these boxes have? if a server can support 9000 clients that must be an insane fd limit.

read the various applications in the docs section of this web site for requirements for potential EFNet servers. It doesn't say that the applicant must have root on the machine, but I think that is pretty much a given since the machine must be a dedicated machine only for the EFNet irc server.

yeah i have read those docs and it does not state that stuff inside the docs itself but it seems that it is pretty much needed, so i was looking for the official efnet stance on it.

Whatever number of clients you allow, you must allow a large percentage over for identd lookups, reserved sockets (for exceed_limit opers), DNS, and other ircd internals.

For example, irc.rt.ru used to have 16k fd's and was restricted to 12k clients (though we never really hit much over 10k).

I get D-Lined when using this server, so it's certainly not open to everyone. Using Pacific Internet, from Singapore. Hostname pacific.net.sg
