irc.aol.com signed off for good (again) today. According to its admin, it was looked upon as a waste of hardware, time and money. We're sorry to see it go.

yeah, i would say that would probably have been one of the best servers around just because of the resources AOL has. good thing it didn't become a hub when they were trying to though :-\

I'm sorry to see AOL go. It was very stable, and pretty much unaffected by large scale DoS attacks. In any case, Kudos to mxmumtuna. I feel he 'cleared up AOL name' on EFnet, as the first AOL server delinked under heavy fire.

I hardly used irc.aol.com, but I had this feeling that I could alway use the server as backup if all other fails. Shame it left with such great standing with the community. Oh well. Nothing lasts forever.

Yea, my guess is that they removed the servers because they couldnt make profit of them, and they would like to use the hardware and manpower to keep them running to do something else.

Considering it was one of undernet`s primary hub i think the shock of its delink is worse for them then it is for us.

I dont know really, not much beeing said about it except that they are doing "some stuff" on their network so they are down for now. I wanted to make a news post about secsup and weblook , but cant seem to get any information at all about it... so i guess no one knows for sure.

out of curiosity, what is the avg spec's for an ircd machine now? forgoing the bandwidth requirements, does the hardware have to be that great so as to make aol(or any company) want to take the two server machines(i assume 1 for efnet, 1 for undernet) and use them for something else. lord only knows aol already has football fields of server in the trenches.

you can build a nice ircd box for under $2k

usually rackmount, 2ghz or so, a gig of ram, decent speed hdd, and 100mbit - 1gbit NIC would probably do it.

You can build that sort of box with 600 USD or less.

getting that in a standard case, yes. getting all that in a 1U rackmount usually isn't quite as easy. and you don't want to pick a cheap NIC like linksys, you usually want to go for a higher end server class NIC (cheaper NICs will take more of a CPU hit under heavy load).
and you want a server class motherboard that is designed for that type of environment. cheaper motherboards whine when you boot it without keyboard, or a monitor, which is necessary in a rack environment.
