I've only ran "production" level servers using Windows 2000, so I am definitely not a good judge of what's good and what's bad. I've also ran Linux and FBSD before. Linux used for desktop and personal webserver. FBSD had been used primary for "testing" only. I never really picked it up, but I did manage to properly (I think) update it from one version to another, which I thought was an accomplishment for myself. I also used it to run a short lived IRC server, where the only users were myself and... my other self, just to gain a little insight on IRCDs. FBSD's ports system is very handy, but I think Gentoo's is very nice too. I can't shake the feeling that I'm uncomfortable with FBSD, while I am on some Linux installation. I don't know why. </random blurb>

depends entirely on the purpose of the server and the environment in which it will be used

OS X server in a mac environment
win2k in a windows environment (haven't looked at 2k3 yet)
for "real" *nix, i like solaris (irix and hpux are clunky, from my experience)
for linux, i like gentoo and debian
for bsd, free or open

(i can see this thread quickly turning into a flamewar)

I agree about the flame war...

I like win2k if you can use it correctly... Like if you use all of its features.. effectively.. like Active directory...
Youd be surprised how often i see 2k servers that are running like glorified win NT 4 servers...

For linux i like debian..
I think redhat is a good place to start through... Mandrake is also a good place to start...

DOn't even get me started on Mac OS...

Bad experiences... so.. no comment there from me.

Why in the world would anyone use Macs in for a server type application?! :) If you are truely a linux guru, I guess that you can make RedHat manageable and secure. FreeBSD is my choice in BSD, and even *nix os'.

I like solaris, on the linux side slackware is pretty nice.

if you have dozens of mac workstations, why would you use anything but a mac server? it seems silly to me to use a linux or windows server to do file serving, etc, in a mac environment (unless the windows/linux workstations vastly outnumbered the mac workstations)

OS X Server is usable (not my OS of choice altogether, but on a Mac, it's leaps and bounds beyond os8-9), and can even effectively be used for httpd, dhcpd, named, etc (though knowing unix is a must for configuring some of the more specifics, apple needs to work on that i think if they want to pick up on the market of admins that don't know shit)[/b]

Ah yes, for Mac workstation enviroments for file serving, it does make sense.

(here comes the flamebait)

windows does not suck as a server when properly configured. by blocking a handful of ports, it is possible to secure a windows nt/2k/2k3 server just as tight as any unix system (135,137-139, 1433 [mssql]). i have in the past configured IIS to be imune to any codered-type worms by simply removing the extensions .ida, .idq, .printer, etc. this made it so when codered and nimda did come around, i could patch at my own convenience, because i wasn't vulnerable. my home win2k server can match or beat my sun and my sgi in uptime, simply because usually the only time any of them reboot is when there is a power outage.

Judging by corrupt's Avatar, I would expect he's more of a FreeBSD man, lol.

Though I do have to agree, from what i've heard anyway FreeBSD is one of the best out there, for a server, at least we always use FreeBSD.

But it depends on the usage, if its simply for a network, a windows server would be more approprate due to most network platforms.

This website runs on FreeBSD -- can't you feel the power? :)

*Poke* *Poke* Yesh! I feel the surge! So, really, what makes most (all?) of EFNet servers run FBSD over other "Unices"? I guess that's still on topic.
