cant connect to irc.prison.net

Postby KiZ » Mon Oct 24, 2005 10:47 pm

Ive been using irc.prison.net for quite a while now, but yesterday I was disconnected with the message "Socket Disconnected" and havent been able to conenct since.

Anyone any idea why this has happened? I'm not exactly an IRC expert, is this a problem that happens from time to time or what?

I did get a CTCP version request from "HndlWCare" about 10 seconds before the original disconnect, and HydraIRC responded accordingly.

Heres an example of what happens when I try to connect.

Code: Select all

you can always try another server
make sure you have a properly working ident (enable port forwarding if you are using a proxy/firewall)
In God we trust,
Everyone else must have an X.509 certificate.

I know I can use a different server, but irc.prison.net is may fav ;)

I'll try seeing if my firewall is interfering.

Try another server, and once you get on, /stats p irc.prison.net , which will show you a list of opers on that server and their idle time in seconds. /msg the opers with the lowest idle times (and that don't look like monitor bots). You can then ask those opers why you are banned, and they may be able to help you connect again.

I didnt realise I had been banned, I thought a ban message was supposed to appear?

Anyway, spoke to an Op and got it sorted out. Turned out I was klined for flooding, me and a friend were having some fun, apparently prison must be a bit sensitive about flooding.

Thanks for the help

IMO prison.net is useless, try a different server, chances are if you traceroute the servers you will find one that is closer, and ultimatly quicker for you.

Try and find one that is most local to you.

If you are going to say that something is "useless" and recommend that people stop using it, it might be good to state some actual reasons why you believe that. Looking at the server list, there seem to be about 2,500 people who don't agree with you, more than are on irc.choopa.net, irc.wh.verio.net, irc.he.net, ptptech, lagged, umich, etc. These people don't seem to find it "useless".

Yeah, although it may be good to note that you won't get a full traceroute from most servers due to filtering.

most often you can find something close by that you can trace (www, ns, mail, etc). even if you do traceroute to the ircd, filtering on pings generally happens at the border of the network, so you can still get a good idea within a couple of hops.

Over the years I have had problems with prison, last I checked, i'm entitled to my own opinion. Besides obviously this guy is experiencing problems with it. Don't take it personally. 8)
