i'm not sure what search engine you're refering to, but once you connect to an irc server, then you type /join #channel

I don't know how much you do/don't know about EFNet, but you'll probably want to check out http://www.irchelp.org , too. You'll need an IRC client (the most popular one for Windows is mIRC, http://www.mirc.co.uk ). If you are trying to find software or music downloads, make sure to read http://irchelp.org/download
