allowing longer topic lengths

Postby tech » Wed Aug 13, 2003 12:24 pm

ive been annoyed by that efnet servers often have different topic length (and very short ones), it should be the same on all efnet, and it should be long enough, since the topics often doesnt fit :) thats annoying, and i know a lot of other people is annoyed by that :)

A, yes. Longer topic length is something that has annoyed me for years. I have been to smaller IRC Networks that have allowed a very long maximum length of topics, and that is a very fine attitude. Makes me wanna post long topics all day! :P

Topic length should be set to 120 on all servers, but I think a few have 250. Kind of silly not to be uniform with the rest of the network, if you ask me.

Yes, that is kind of odd... Wouldn't this cause problems?

No, it'd just be cut short on the servers that have it at 120.

For years, XO's hub was set to the old default of 80, where everyone use (including XO's client server) were set to 120. It simply takes time and cooperation between developers to set their defaults.

admins, not developers. the only limit the developers put in is the buffer space available for the topic, which is probably much much higher than is actually used. it's the admin's that compile and manage the conf that set the limit (most admin's are not developers of their own ircd)

why dont anybody take me seriously? efnet should increase topic length, and the servers should not have different topic lengths (since nobody likes that the topic gets cutted) ?

why not put up a vote about this? ADMINS!

The topic lenth was already voted on nd standardized to the 120 car limit.

Before this topics were stuck at 80 on the other side of xo's hub.

We finally fixed this issue so everyone has at least 120, and now people want more?

See the problem is.. the more we make it... he more people will want.

There has to be an end someplace.

I agree severs should really use a standard topic length. its fairly silly for some servers to allow more if only to annoy other users on other servers...

But.. as far as a greater length...
We've already gone to a greater length, so.. i doubt there will be any sort of increase in the near future.

Sorry...

Becides, if we increase it to 300... someone else will want 500...

The topic length was set to 80 and later 120 due to that in the old days memory was a problem. It isn't today. The channels i use (my local friends and i in them) really takes advantages of the 255 chars topic length we have on irc.csbnet.se. I have yet to see that its not enough. Every msg seems to fit now. We dont need a 500 chars topic really, but more than 120.

We (and other) tend to use the topic as a news-stand for whats going on in the channel. Not really a topic as a discussion topic. The channel name already has that "topic". When having news you usally have more than one news. 120 chars only fit one or two news.

Increasing to 255 is not a problem really. Just EFnet politics in the way. And we all know how that one works. There is no rule against having longer topic as long as it doesn't break/crash other servers or the global state.

And for topics being cut, well thats really not a problem. Perhaps somewhat annoying. So use a client that tells you how many chars you have used up. You still have to sit there and reset a longer topic to get it to fit in 120 chars today. Or you can just use those server that has 255 chars topic, like me and my friends :-)

Time for the batching now? :-)

most people i know use a website or newsbot to disperse news. that or most people don't care about the news.
personally, i never use the topic for anything more than sharing 1 url (which there are dozens of webpages for shortening long urls, i wrote one of them myself), or pasting out of context quotes

i'm pefectly happy with a not real long topic. the topics not all fitting in the little topic bar (so that you have to type /topic #channel to see it all) annoys me just about as much as long nicks on other networks, where they fall off the right side of the screen they're so long.

color abuse leads to me going blind.
