pear install pdflib

Hi--I'm new to this forum, hoping someone call help with running the command 'pear install pdflib'.
I have been trying to install PDFlib Lite on a Linux (Fedora 5) install. Have installed ZendCore for Oracle. All the documentation says to us the 'pear install pdflib' command, but when used at root, all I get is "bash: pear: command not found".
Anyone know how to get pear to work???
